America's Test Kitchen is seeking a Copy Editor who will report to the Executive Managing Editor, Magazines. The Copy Editor will be one of a small team responsible for fulfilling the copyediting requirements for Cook’s Illustrated and Cook’s Country magazines and their companion websites, along with numerous special issues and ATK marketing and promotional materials. The position is site-based. ESSENTIAL
ELEMENTS OF POSITION:
Per year, copyedit 6 issues (32 pages each) of Cook’s Illustrated and 6 issues of Cook’s Country at two key junctures in the editorial process.
Copyedit 25 special issues (between 64 and 144 pages each) per year.
Copyedit material to be published on companion websites and in email newsletters.
Key in copyedit changes to layouts using K4/InCopy desktop publishing software. Ensure that all changes are properly entered.
Review/approve proofreader marks for Cook’s Illustrated and Cook’s Country.
Copyedit marketing and promotional materials as necessary.
Check work assigned to freelancers for correctness and accuracy.
Maintain ATK style guides.
Suggest changes for improving copyediting processes when necessary.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Excellent copyediting and proofreading skills
Basic understanding of K4/InCopy software or other similar desktop publishing program
Familiarity with Macintosh and Microsoft Word
Knowledge of food and home cooking
Working knowledge of the Chicago Manual of Style
Experience in editing recipes
Attention to detail and ability to meet key deadlines, including flexibility during peak workload periods
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
BA/BS (or equivalent) in Journalism, Communications, English, or related field
3 to 4 years of magazine or newspaper copyediting experience, along with some project management experience
A culinary degree or hands-on cooking experience, while not a requirement, is a significant plus.
